In view of the situation arising out of the coronavirus outbreak in Maharashtra, coupled with incessant rains in July and August, new fair price grain shops will be opened in urban areas as well. This decision was undertaken by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

The state government had earlier taken steps to restructure fair price shops to increase the income of the grain shopkeepers. But in view of the time required for this process, the announcement of distribution of new shops in urban areas was postponed in 2018. Now, cereal shops are set to open.

Currently, the downtrodden people in the state are facing a plethora of issues due to the coronavirus infection. The affected population resides in urban areas as well. Moreover, the possibility of a third wave cannot be ruled out. Therefore, it is important to continue the crucial work of distributing food grains and kerosene through fair price shops to the needy of the state during this period. In such a situation, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that it is imperative to provide government assistance in the form of food grains through fair price shopkeepers and it is the responsibility of the state to restore the basic condition of the city.
