On Friday afternoon, a part of a staircase collapsed in a Chippi Chawl, Zaveri Bazaar killing two labourers and rescuing one. Safar Ul Sheikh (23) and Firoze Khan (22) were the labourers who died in the collapse and the injured labourer was sent to J J Hospital.

A part of staircase collapsed during the repairs of a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) building around 2:30 pm trapping labourers. When the incident occurred, seven labourers were successful in saving their lives.

Chippi Chawl is MHADA’s cess building and is in a dilapidated state. In 2016, MHADA had issued an order to do repairs of the building but residents were not ready to vacate the building. However, in the month of September, residents vacated the building. Labourers were repairing the bathroom when the accident took place.

MHADA has formed an inquiry committee which will be headed by deputy chief engineer and will investigate the matter following by submitting the report," said Sumit Bhange, MBRB.
