Mumbai: City experiences 43% more rainfall during this year's monsoon

In 2019, there was a delay of 39 days for monsoon withdrawal, and this year rain is likely to withdraw on October 9 than the usual date of Sept 29.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city has received 43% of more rainfall during this year's monsoon than average seasonal rainfall.

In this monsoon season, the month of August experienced below-normal rainfall, and September an active southwest monsoon. 

However, as per IMD, the state has received normal seasonal rainfall since rainfall between -19 percent and +19 percent of the long period average is normal. Maharashtra has recorded 19% excess rain, measuring 1,190.4 mm. The normal rainfall for four months is 999.8 mm.

Marathwada recorded excess rainfall since the onset of the southwest monsoon, despite being the epicenter of drought. Vidarbha region also recorded 3% of excess rains than usual during four months of monsoon.

Reportedly, Mumbai has recorded 3,163.5 mm rainfall from June 1 to September 30 compared to the seasonal average of  2,205.8 mm.

On Tuesday, September 28, the water level in the seven lakes of Mumbai crossed 99.07%, according to the BMC's data.

In 2019, there was a delay of 39 days for monsoon withdrawal. As per the revised dates, this year's monsoon is likely to withdraw from the city on October 8 than the usual date of September 29.
