Continuing the trend of preventing encroachment under flyovers in the city, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has undertaken an ingenious decision. The civic authority has decided to ameliorate sports infrastructure and open gyms in the said place, claim officials, according to reports.

A similar project was undertaken by the NMMC earlier, when they curated an open gym alongside a jogging track below the flyover connecting Nerul, sector 21 with sector 46. Plans are now within the pipeline, to curate facilities for table tennis, volleyball and an open gym below the flyover connecting Sanpada, sector 16 with sector 8.

City engineer of NMMC, Sanjay Desai, according to a report by the Hindustan Times elaborated on how space below major flyovers in Navi Mumbai is unutilized, propelling people to encroach them either for parking vehicles, operating shops and others. The homeless too, tend to take shelter beneath them and neither the civic authority nor the police department is aware of their background. Therefore, to beautify the area, sports infrastructure and open gyms are set to be built under the flyovers, he said.

The civic authority has selected two flyovers in Nerul and Sanpada as part of the first phase. Earlier this week, work at Nerul flyover was completed. He said that they are now awaiting the civic body’s approval for the work at Sanpada for which a budget of ₹60 lakh has been set aside.

The said account further quoted another senior officer from the engineering department who said that a survey is being conducted to decide on more flyovers in the city. The survey will prioritize bridges in proper residential areas since those on the highway won’t be safe for use by the public.
