The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is the only body in the state to have attained the water plus city, tag. This came to light, last week after the Central government declared the outcome of the Swachh Survekshan, 2021, cited reports.

Cities in India are examined on a range of sanitation criteria in the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) program. The classifications include Water+, ODF++ and ODF+.

It is under this, that the NMMC was awarded the second-highest recognition of ODF++ in the Open Defecation Free group of the Clean Survey 2021, in the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The authorities are now rated as the third cleanest city in India and the best clean city in Maharashtra in the “Clean Survey 2020”.

Reports also cite that according to Swachh Survekshan, 2021, outcomes, four cities in India managed to attain the Water Plus rating of which Navi Mumbai was a part.

Abhijit Bangar the chief of NMMC believes that it is a matter of pride and happiness for all those who reside in Navi Mumbai. He goes on to give them the credit for this achievement as well.

NMMC’s Solid Waste Management Department’s official, according to a report stated that during the time of the Clean Survey 2021, many problems that were in tandem with cleanliness under the ODF criteria were carefully examined by the team. Many areas of the city were studied without giving prior information to the civic authorities. In addition to this, daily wastewater treatment procedure was also surveyed by them, stated reports.

In order to attain this feat, NMMC took a great many steps. From treating 100% of everyday produced waste of 380 MLDL, sewage water was also treated in plants in seven steps. The latest CTech technology-based sewage treatment plant is equipped with 40% greater capability to treat than the present facilities. It is also claimed its sewage network is 95% greater than those in other cities.

With an ODF++ rating, the authority is enforcing the ODF vigorously. Reports state that to see to it that open defection doesn’t occur, a “Good Morning Squad” undertakes a surprise visit. With 394 community toilets, 220 public toilets, 20 e-toilets and 6 special She-toilets for women, the area is equipped to see the task through. 5094 household toilets have also been built in the slums, mentioned an official according to reports.
