According to reports, Maharashtra’s new Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 will be governed by a seven-member committee, spearheaded by the Chief Secretary, who will also serve as the chairperson.

Moreover, the additional chief secretary of the transport department will serve as its member secretary. The policy is likely to get a cabinet nod soon. In addition, the committee will consist of two principal secretaries from the urban development department and principal secretaries of environment, energy and industries departments along with industry representatives.

According to a report shared by the transport department on May 27, “Steering Committee shall be supported by a dedicated team, or a secretariat called the Maharashtra State EV Secretariat. The secretariat will comprise a team of professionals who be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the EV Policy. The secretariat will be housed in the transport department of Maharashtra.”

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government had earlier announced the Electric Vehicles (EV) Policy 2021, which will be aimed at ensuring that electric vehicles account for at least 10 per cent of all new vehicle registrations by the year 2025.

Officials familiar with the matter said that this policy will see the switching of fuel-based government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) starting in April 2022 across major cities of the state. The draft of this policy is currently waiting for approval from the State Cabinet.
