CT scan services have resumed at the Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Hospital in Jogeshwari after remaining non-operational for nearly four months, bringing relief to patients requiring emergency diagnostic imaging.
The hospital's newly appointed Medical Superintendent, Dr. Niranjan Kshirsagar, restored the facility within five days of taking charge. The scanner had been lying idle due to the failure of a critical component, while delays in procuring an imported replacement had prolonged the disruption.
To expedite the restoration, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sourced a compatible spare part from a decommissioned CT scanner at Sion Hospital and installed it at the Jogeshwari trauma centre, allowing the machine to become operational again.
During the outage, trauma patients were referred to other civic hospitals or had to undergo MRI scans, which are generally more expensive and less suitable than CT scans for rapidly assessing head injuries, fractures and internal bleeding in emergency situations. The hospital typically handles around 25 to 30 CT scans every day.
The restoration of the CT scanner is expected to significantly improve emergency care at the hospital, particularly during the monsoon season, when road accidents and trauma cases usually increase.
