43 areas, 497 buildings and 6416 floors sealed as COVID-19 containment zones in Mumbai: BMC report

Mumbai's average COVID-19 doubling rate stands at 68 days, with Chembur West, Bandra, Andheri West, Goregaon and Khar being the most affected. A total of 11 wards in Mumbai have a lower doubling rate in comparison to the average.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the city of Mumbai are increasing rapidly and keeping the same in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started taking strict measures under the directives issued by the state government. 

As per the data released by the BMC on Friday, March 26, 2021, Mumbai had a total of 3,80,115 cases, out of which 3,33,603 patients were discharged after the treatment. More than 11,000 deaths have been registered due to COVID-19 infection and the city, as of Friday, had 33,961 active cases, out of which 26,141 were asymptomatic and 7,293 were symptomatic. More than 527 patients are in critical condition.

Observing the rise in cases, the BMC has sealed a total of 43 areas and slums along with 497 buildings in Mumbai, marking them as containment zones. Over 6,400 floors have been sealed in Mumbai as coronavirus cases were reported from the same. 

Ward S (Bhandup), K-East (Andheri East), M-West (Chembur) and L (Kurla) had the most number of areas sealed. Ward K-West (Andheri West), D, M-West (Chembur) and F-South, have the most number of buildings sealed in Mumbai. Moreover, Ward-T (Mulund), K-West (Andheri West), P-North, and K-East (Andheri East) have the most floors sealed.

Areas like Andheri, Borivali, Dahisar, Malad, Goregaon, and Mulund have the most number of cases in Mumbai. Andheri-West has a total of 3,107 active cases followed by Andheri-East and Borivali. The average growth rate recorded in Mumbai stands at 0.98 per cent, and Wards M-West, H-West, and K-West have the highest growth rate of 1.38, 1.35 and 1.31 per cent respectively.

The government is taking necessary measures to curb the spread and has appealed to the citizens to show support. CM Uddhav Thackeray has asked people to follow the norms strictly by wearing masks when in public and maintaining a social distance at all times. If the citizens flout the rules and if the cases do not reduce, the government will consider imposing a lockdown. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that the lockdown would be considered as an option if people do not show their support in managing the crisis.
