According to latest reports, out of the total 60.7 lakhs, Maharashtra has covered 54 per cent vaccination of the one dose for children aged between 15-18 in over a month’s period time. Youngsters have to take two Covaxin shots 28 days apart.

The data revealed that smaller districts such as Bhandara, Kolhapur and Sangli are at the forefront of vaccinating this age group with over 70 per cent single-dose coverage. While cities such as Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Pune lag.

As per accounts, Mumbai has so far covered only 46 per cent of its eligible teen population with a single dose in contrast to Bhandara, which has covered 77 per cent of the pool.

Districts that have done better say they have benefited from their early efforts to counsel the masses regarding the importance of vaccination. Also, several districts held vaccination camps within educational institutes to inoculate large numbers of students.

BMC commissioner Suresh Kakani said vaccination in the 15-18 group is picking up now after a low key start.

The vaccination drive for the teenagers began on January 3.
