Three positive cases of COVID-19 were detected in the last two days at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi. The new cases have sent the APMC administration in a state of panic. The market body on Tuesday, April 28, closed around 100 shops at the vegetable market after a trader tested positive.

Despite this, only some parts of the market will remain shut while the rest will continue to remain functional. The three new cases also include a security officer who worked in APMC's fruit market. As per the authorities, the security official had visited different parts of the market as a part of his daily tasks. This means that the traders, visitors, other security officers, vehicle drivers, have come in contact with the official.

The medical officer of APMC, Dr Ajay Patil confirmed that two positive cases were reported on Tuesday and one case was detected on Monday. He stated that the market will be disinfected as per the norms and assured that the market will continue to operate and there will no impact on the supply of essentials.

So far, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the market has already been closed twice after the traders pointed out lack of security measures. After which, the government assured safety measures and social distancing in the market premises for the traders as well as mathadi workers. Accordingly, the operations resumed in the market.

The new cases emerging from the market are concerning as, in case of an outbreak in the APMC premises, the market area would have to be shut. This could directly affect the supply of groceries in Mumbai and the adjoining areas.
