As the number of cases in Maharashtra has crossed the 8,500-mark, state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Monday hinted that the lockdown may be extended after May 3.

In the view of the increasing cases of coronavirus or COVID-19 across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 extended the nationwide lockdown which will end on May 3. India has been under lockdown since March 25 and all states have barred district travels while sealing their borders to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking on the lockdown extension, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh indicated that the same may be extended beyond May 3. This would be limited to some red zones, he added.

“Going by the prevalence of the COVID-19 cases in some parts of the state such as in red zones, the lockdown may be extended in those areas,” Anil Deshmukh said while adding that the final decision on the lockdown extension will be announced by Maharastra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The remarks made by the Maharashtra Home Minister come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting with chief ministers of several states over the lockdown via video conferencing.

Along with appreciating the efforts of the state amid coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hinted towards extending the lockdown in hotspots after May 3.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister asked the Chief Ministers to draw an exit policy in relation to the lockdown while stating that the same should be in view of their red, orange and green zones. The basis of the state-wise exit policy on lockdown relaxation or extension should be on ground realities, Modi said.

Earlier on April 25, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the state government may extend the lockdown in Mumbai and Pune for 15 more days. The nationwide lockdown may be lifted, but it would be extended in Mumbai and Pune until May 18, Tope added.
