Opposition in Maharashtra can't differentiate between right and wrong: Sanjay Raut

Amid the pending approval of Maharashtra Governor to nominate Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as an MLC, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that the “frustrated” opposition party should realise that the Shiv Sena-led government will remain in power under Uddhav Thackeray even after May 27.

In his weekly column ‘Rokhtok’ published in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, Raut wrote that the political parties in the centre adopted the policy of weakening the states where their party is not in power in the last 60 years and the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had dismissed non-Congress governments in the nine states, PTI reported.

“The centre has adopted the policy of weakening the states where their party is not in power. This is happening for the last 60 years. Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had dissolved governments in nine states where non-Congress parties were in power,” Raut stated in his weekly column.

The senior Shiv Sena leader further said that the position of Governor has been misused for such work. Taking a dig at Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Raut said that the governor’s image is getting maligned because BJP leaders are frequently meeting him at Raj Bhavan as if he was still a leader of the saffron party.

“A senior minister in the Maharashtra cabinet informed me that since the opposition leaders meet the Governor more often, a cottage in the Raj Bhavan should be declared as the official residence of the Leader of Opposition (LoP),” Raut said.

On various occasions, the senior leaders of BJP including LoP Devendra Fadnavis and Kirit Somaiya have met Governor Koshyari. The BJP has even submitted memorandums pointing out faults over various issues under the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Raut further said that Uddhav Thackeray enjoys the support of 175 MLAs which will continue in future as well. "The opposition in Maharashtra has lost its sense of differentiating between right and wrong. Even during the COVID-19 crisis, the opposition party want to bring anarchy in the state," the Shiv Sena leader said.

Earlier, Sanjay Raut had questioned the delay in Uddhav Thackeray’s appointment as an MLC by the Governor. Uddhav Thackeray took oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister on November 28, 2019, and is not the member of either house - legislative assembly or council. According to the Indian constitution, within six months of taking the oath, any minister is supposed to get elected in either state legislative assembly or council.

The deadline for Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to get elected to the state legislature is May 27. The Maharashtra cabinet, in absence of CM Uddhav Thackeray, decided to recommend his name to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari who has two vacant seats from the governor’s quota.
