in the early hours of Wednesday, there was overcrowding at the fruit and vegetable market at SB Road near Pramod Mahajan Udyanand had to be shut down. It is noteworthy that these vendors would set shop at Dadar and had to be shifted to the current place to avoid over-crowding.

Despite repeated appeals to maintain social distancing by the state government as well as the health officials, scores of people were seen standing in large groups near the vendors to buy vegetables and fruits.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed the nation and emphasised that social distancing is the only way to counter the spread of nCOVID-19. However, with people clearly flouting the directives by the state government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to shut down the Dadar Market which was shifted to SB Road near Pramod Mahajan Udyan.

While the market in Dadar East has been shut down, the other places where the market was decentralised to will remain open. The markets at Somaiya Ground, MMRDA Exhibition Ground, Mulund octroi Naka, and Dahisar octroi Naka will remain open.

Vehicles that are carrying vegetables and are entering Mumbai from Pune and Nasik side will go to Somaiya and MMRDA. Retail vendors residing between Ghatkopar and Matunga need to go to Somaiya to collect the produce, while vendors residing between Bandra and Goregaon will visit the MMRDA ground.

Meanwhile, vegetable vendors coming from between Mulund and Ghatkopar will have to go to the Mulund octroi Naka.
