According to sources, just like last year, Dharavi has been successful in containing the spread of the coronavirus this time around as well.

On Monday, April 26, Dharavi reported 25 positive COVID-19 cases. After October 2020, single-digit patients were being registered in Dharavi. After the increase in the number of patients in Dharavi in February 2021, the Northern Division took immediate steps with regards to mobile test vans, fever clinics and contact tracing.

Furthermore, this year, Dharavi has reported a total of 2,220 cases till April 20 whereas Dadar reported 3,341 cases and Mahim 3,574 cases. Dharavi has contributed to 0.7% of Mumbai’s total cases reported during this time around. On the other hand, the cause of the spike in COVID-19 cases across areas of Dadar and Mahim is reportedly due to the residential buildings. These buildings have reported more cases than Dharavi as observed during the second wave, where more cases are being reported from residential buildings than from slums and chawls.

Meanwhile, testing plans are being drafted to control the infection, and clean up marshals have been deployed in several areas under the directive of the municipality. In recent developments, the Mumbai Police has taken up the task of disciplining the citizens through patrolling. Every department is raising awareness among the locals with the help of representatives. According to authorities, officials are controlling the crowds in the market and cracking down on those walking without face masks.
