There have been numerous incidents of passengers forgetting and missing their valuables like purse, bag, laptops, important documents, Credit/Debit cards in trains and at stations during their journey. 

In most of the cases Employees of Central Railway (CR) have come to the rescue irrespective of whether a complaint has been registered or not and the response in most cases has been very prompt. 

A couple of recent incidents in last few days have been shared below:

1. Vishal’s mother while travelling from Renigunta to Mantralayam Road realised that she forgot her purse in the train after about an hour of deboarding. A complaint was registered with the Railway helpline. CR RPF force swing into action in no time. RPF Solapur called up the passenger for more details,and forwarded it to RPF Wadi. The train was checked with help from the Conductor, the purse was retrieved and the passenger was duly informed. All this was done within 20 minutes of complaint registration.

2. A bag with Rs. 10,000 in cash along with ATM cards, Passbooks, FD receipts, documents etc., was found by pointsman Pooja & RPF staff and handed over to the Station Master of Sion station. Some enquires were made and the owner was traced with the help of pass books of Bank of Maharashtra. The bag belonged to John Peter, a senior citizen. Both Vishal and Peter were extremely grateful to Indian Railways and were all praise for all the Railway employees who helped them get their valuables back. 

3. While working on the Vashi - Panvel section, our dedicated TTE, H M Waghela, found a leather bag with a laptop and vital documents left in First Class. He traced the rightful owner, Kiran, after verification, safely returned the belongings. Kiran was thrilled to get back his valuables and thanked Railways!


The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel are always in the forefront and keep round the clock vigil in safeguarding not o­nly railway properties but also play multiple roles of Life Saviours, Runaway Children Rescuers, Luggage Retrievers etc.

Besides the core duty of safeguarding Railway property, the RPF under the operation “Amanat” has gone beyond the call of their duty and helped passengers in need and retrieved and returned their lost or left behind luggage, valuable articles such as mobile phone, laptop, jewellery, cash etc. to passengers.

During the current year from January to October 2024, under the Operation ‘Amanat’, the RPF has retrieved luggage of 1306 passengers valued about Rs. 4.60 crore. These luggage retrieval cases include the articles like bags, Mobile Phones, Purse, Laptop and other valuable articles.

Division wise details of value of luggage of passengers retrieved are as under:

Mumbai Division: Rs. 2.28 crore worth luggage of 580 passengers

Bhusaval Division: Rs.1.00 crore worth luggage of 230 passengers

Nagpur Division: Rs. 59.38 lakh worth luggage of 291 passengers

Solapur Division: Rs. 36.75 lakh worth luggage of 92 passengers

Pune Division: Rs. 35.22 lakh worth luggage of 113 passengers

These soldiers of the Railway Protection Force also face diverse security challenges such as crime against passengers and railway properties, extremist violence, obstruction to train movement etc. The work of these brave soldiers of the Railway Protection Force can be summarised as Suraksha, Satarkta and Seva and they have discharged their duties with utmost dedication alertness and courage.
