According to sources, the redevelopment work of the Crawford Market which has been stalled for the last several years has finally received clearance from the Bombay High Court

Moreover, a bench of justices Sunil Deshmukh and Girish Kulkarni granted the guarantee and directed several areas to be vacated within a week. Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had earlier undertaken the redevelopment project as several constructions in the area were damaged. Earlier on March 26, the BMC had issued notices to 137 licensees to vacate the premises in view of the redevelopment work.

Furthermore, as the Mandai building is a heritage site, there are several limitations to redevelopment work that can be conducted and is in accordance with the 1991 Development Control Regulations. However, the first phase of Mandai has been redeveloped.

On the other hand, the civic body had earlier shut down the parking lot right outside the Crawford Market complex. It was temporarily converted into a fruit market by the civic body. This decision came as the BMC has taken up the construction of three sections of Crawford market comprising – basement, ground floor and two-storeys as a part of renovation after restoring the heritage section of the market.

As per reports, another reason for this decision was because the agreement with the contractor of the parking lot ended. Hence, the civic body did not invite fresh tenders and developed the spot for fruit vendors instead.
