The iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is scheduled for a grand world-class makeover. As per sources, the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) plans to convert the station into a more modern terminus with fresh bells and whistles on the PPP model, while retaining its heritage value.

According to sources, officials have stated that the Railway Board has given the green signal for the redevelopment of CSMT. The CR's main office, currently located there, will be shifted to Byculla.

In addition to the infrastructural and the logistic changes, CSMT will be completely remodelled with not only state-of-the-art toilets but now private shops such as cafes and restaurants will appear in one of the world's most expensive commercial properties. In fact, it is estimated that it will generate revenue of around ₹10,000 crores with a relatively small area of 2.5 lakh square meters which forms the heritage structure.

Last November, the IRSC and the CR had finalized the master plan to redevelop the CSMT into a world-class station while restoring its heritage charm. The reform plan was approved by the Chief Approval of the Public-Private Partnership Evaluation Committee (PPPAC) for CSMT redevelopment on PPP mode, after which the IRSDC invited the request for eligibility (RFQ).

The CSMT has been UNESCO recognised world heritage site and the biggest railway terminal in Mumbai. The 130-year-old grand building has been constructed in the Victorian Gothic style and houses the Central Railways headquarters, platforming the suburban and the long-distance trains.
