Mumbai: 24-year-old rape accused dies in custody

On Wednesday night, September 29, a rape accused in Thane Jail was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The body of the accused has been sent for postmortem at JJ Hospital by the jail authorities. They are waiting for the reports to arrive.

A police officer, while addressing the situation, said they have informed the family of the accused about his death, and are waiting for postmortem reports. The family has alleged that he had no health issues and died suddenly under mysterious circumstances.

The 24-year-old was arrested for allegedly raping his 17-year-old girlfriend. The incident surfaced when she was found to be six months pregnant.

The accused, on Wednesday, September 29, started vomiting and fell ill.  He was taken to Shivaji Hospital at Kalwa, where his treatment was done, said Thane Jail Superintendent Harshad Aherao. He further added that after some time, the accused died.

The family was unaware of the affair. In July, the minor was admitted to the hospital and was found to be six months pregnant. The hospital then informed the police as she was a minor. The police officers posed as doctors and called the accused to the hospital following which he was arrested.

The girl was, however, ready to marry the guy, but since she was a minor, the 24-year old "got stuck in the case," said the deceased's uncle as per Mid-day.

Malad police had arrested the accused under relevant sections of The Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POSCO Act.
