On Sunday, March 6, the Shiv Sena ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated the Dabbawala Bhavan at Bandra which was part of the party’s manifesto and was in the pipeline for years.

According to reports, the civic body was allotted an area amounting to 286.27 sq metres in Bandra’s Shirley area for the Dabbawala Bhavan building. The aim of the building is to offer Mumbai’s Dabbawalas a place to rest and operate from.

The function was conducted in the presence of Mumbai suburban guardian minister, Aaditya Thackeray, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Transport Minister Anil Parab, amongst others.

Chahal took to Twitter saying, “BMC honoured the Dabbewalas of Mumbai by alloting them 'Dabbewala Bhavan' worth Rs 25 Crs at token rate in high-end Bandra. Gratitude for serving Mumbaikars for the last 132 years. Nearly 5000 Dabbewalas deliver home cooked tiffins to nearly 2 lakh Mumbaikars daily. I salute them.”

Earlier the Bhavan was promised in the run-up to the 2017 BMC elections by the Shiv Sena. However, citing the non-availability of land, the project was kept on the back burner. After being part of the party’s election manifesto Pednekar made a notice of motion to set up the facility.

This was then approved in the general body meeting. Following this, in 2021-22, budget, Chahal had sanctioned INR 1 crore for setting up the Bhavan. However, back then as well the BMC claimed to have no available land.
