Dahisar River rejuvenation, revitalisation and beautification project was officially launched once again on Sunday, May 10. Union Minister and local MP Piyush Goyal inaugurated the project and announced plans to turn the river into a tourism and recreation destination for North Mumbai.

The project includes the following changes:

  • A Sabarmati riverfront-style makeover along 4.5 kilometres on both sides of the Dahisar River
  • Beautification work, lighting arrangements, boating facilities and the development of ecotourism activities along the riverfront
  • Seven rainwater harvesting facilities inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where the Dahisar River originates
  • Around 4.4 kilometres of sewer lines to reduce the flow of wastewater into the river.

The inauguration ceremony also marked the completion of two fully automated sewage treatment plants built under Phase 1 of the Dahisar River Revitalisation and Beautification Project. One sewage treatment plant with a capacity of five million litres per day (MLD) has been constructed at Indira Nagar in Dahisar West. Another plant with a capacity of 1.5 MLD has been built at Sukurwadi in Borivali East.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to reuse the treated water from the five MLD plant for non-drinking purposes. The water may be supplied to tankers for gardening, road washing and vehicle cleaning. At present, the treated water is being released back into the river.

The project will improve the 4.75-kilometre river stretch. Officials said nearly 99 per cent of the Phase 1 work has been completed. Some work related to roadside drains, sewer lines and service roads is still pending due to encroachments along the riverbanks.

At the event, Goyal said the BMC alone cannot clean the river and citizens must also participate in the effort. He said the campaign would not succeed unless people stop dumping waste into the river.

The Dahisar River rejuvenation project was first launched during 2016-17 by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Another inauguration was held during 2021-22 by former Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray.

However, it is alleged that little progress has been made over the past decade. Local corporator and standing committee member Prakash Darekar, who attended Sunday’s programme, said some progress had been made this time. He said Phase 1 work near Rustomjee had been inaugurated and the sewage treatment plants were functioning.
