BMC plans to reconstruct 1,343 roads

Due to the heavy rains, the reconstruction of roads was stopped and BMC has announced that it will resume the construction from October 2018

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) claimed that 552.71-kilometre roads have been constructed from October 1, 2016, to May 31, 2018. Along with this, BMC has also constructed a junction in an area of 2,88,000 square metre, Chief Engineer of Road and Transport Department Vinod Chithore informed.

The civic body plans to rebuild and recoat roads about 507 km in distance which includes 1,343 roads from next month.

With 1,343 roads which will be reconstructed and resurfaced, BMC plans to initiate the same in different phases from October 2018 and the process to provide tenders for the same is ongoing. BMC will issue tenders for 624 roads soon and ₹1,508 crore has been set as the budget for the same.

Due to heavy rains in Mumbai, the reconstruction of remaining 719 roads, which is around 305.08 km in length, was stopped. However, after the monsoon season ends, the civic body will start to rebuild 624 roads of 202.31 km.

Of total 1,343 roads, 199 roads of about 46.16 km in the city are under the reconstruction project followed by 155 roads (475.99 km) in Eastern suburbs, 270 roads (108.26 km) in Western suburbs.
