After Sumit Malik's retirement, there were three main contenders for the post namely D K Jain, Additional Chief Secretary Sudhir Kumar Srivastava and Additional Chief Secretary Medha Gadgil. Among all of them, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was keen to appoint D K Jain on the vacant post.
