An explosion was reported in the Indian Navy's destroyer ship, INS Ranvir, late in the afternoon on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. As per reports, three members were killed and 11 were injured n the incident. 

A statement was released regarding the same by the Defence Ministry and officials said that no other major damage was noticed. "In an unfortunate incident today at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, three naval personnel succumbed to injuries caused by an explosion in an internal compartment onboard INS Ranvir. The ship's crew responded immediately and quickly brought the situation under control," the statement read. However, an inquiry has been instituted for the same and a board will look into the matters.

It is being said that explosion was heard, while the ship was docked, between 4.30 and 5:00 pm on Tuesday. The cause of the blast is yet to be identified, however, it was not due to ammunition or weapons. Injured sailors were rushed to the local naval hospital for treatment immediately and are being observed by a team of doctors. 

Officials have said that the deceased were identified as sailors and not officers; and were in the compartment above the AC Compartment where the blast happened. Their respective families have been informed regarding the same and their details will be released soon.

INS Ranvir, fourth destroyer of the Rajput class, is considered among India's oldest warships which was used by the Indian Navy as a destroyer. It was commissioned in April 1986, and was said to be on cross coast operational deployment since November 2021. It was expected to return to the base port shortly.

Similar incident was reported back in 2019 at Mazgaon dockyard when a fire was reported in the Visakhapatnam destroyer. One worker was killed in the incident.
