On Sunday, April 4, a massive tragedy was averted at a jumbo COVID-19 centre in Dahisar where 50 patients were moved out of the facility in time after a fire broke out.

This happens to be the third such instance of a fire breaking out at a COVID-19 care centre in the city in the last six months. According to reports, on Sunday, at least 50 were undergoing treatment at hangar ‘F’, the section where the fire broke out and eventually spread to the adjacent hangar ‘G’ where another 49 had been admitted.

In view of the situation, firefighters and security staff doused the blaze using extinguishers installed at the hospital. As per sources, a short circuit in the electrical wiring reportedly started the fire.

On the other hand, in the past, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had directed coronavirus facilities across Mumbai to conduct a fire audit in order to assess their structural integrity following a fire at a private COVID-19 hospital in Dreams Mall (Bhandup) that took the lives of 11 people. Moreover, the guidelines were issued by BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal wherein all 147 private, government, and civic hospitals, as well as COVID-19 facilities, were asked to carry out the aforementioned process immediately.

The civic body of Mumbai had earlier initiated a similar audit to ascertain fire safety of all the hospitals in the city following a fire at the Bhandara District Hospital in January this year which claimed the lives of 10 newborns.
