The Fire Department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sent notices to 4,732 housing societies for violating fire safety norms from January 2015 to December 2017. If the society does not correct the fire protection norms even after the notice, then a lawsuit will be initiated against them. The department has so far sued 27 such societies.

As per the Maharashtra Fire Prevention & Life Safety Measure Act, 2006, if societies fail to adhere to the safety norms within 120 days of receiving the notice, there will be a fine of ₹20,000 to ₹50000. In addition, there will be a provision of punishment for up to three years.

Along with this, the fire brigade department is going to introduce a new software of building inspection system to see if fire safety norms are being followed in the buildings or not.
