There has been a massive fire reported at Maharana Pratap chowk, Mazgaon,  Byculla East. The fire started at the top floor (10th floor) of ground plus eight-floor structure. The time of report is 12.35 and it has been classified as a Level 3 fire. 

So far there have been no injuries reported for the fire. The fire tenders have rushed to the site and are trying to douse the fire. A huge cloud of smoke can be seen from a distance. 

Update: 13:36 From the recent reports the fire seems to be spreading to other parts of the building. There are 30 fire engines at sight to get this under control. 

The operation lasted for over six hours and 14 fire tenders were deployed in the operation. The top three floors of the building have been damaged in this fire. 


It is said that as soon as the fire started the employees tried to douse the same but it started to spread very quickly.

In the year 2019, a structural audit of the building was ordered. In this audit, it was found that the 10th floor of this 40-year old was built illegally and it was ordered that the same should be demolished. The work for breaking it down had started two months ago. Since the demolition and repair work was being carried out some employees had been shifted to the nearby MTNL building. 

There was a flag hoisted on the top floors and some employees had rushed to remove the same before the fire spread to the top. A video regarding the same had gone viral.  

Deputy CM, Ajit Pawar had informed that the cause of the fire was the plywood kept on one of the floors for the repair work had caught fire.  He also mentioned that there will be an investigation on the files lost in this fire. 

In addition to this, another structural audit of the building will be carried out soon.
