With a decrease in coronavirus cases, there has reportedly been an increase in the number of flights to and from the Mumbai airport.

Moreover, officials have stated that in the months of April and May, flights had come down to 150, however, around 350 flights are being operated at the moment. Meanwhile, the Mumbai airport would record around 960 flights daily before the outbreak of the coronavirus. Flight movements picked up from around 150 per day between July and December to around 670 daily from January to March. In addition, amidst the second wave of the coronavirus, air traffic witnessed a drastic decline as several countries banned flights to and from India.

The aviation industry happens to be the worst hit due to the pandemic. In the last financial year, domestic traffic slipped to a 10-year low at around 53.4 million passengers. In 2010-11 domestic air operators flew 53.8 million passengers, according to industry data. Furthermore, the international air traffic declined over 90 per cent due to the absence of regular flights.

On the other hand, it was only towards the end of the year 2020 that we started seeing the sector make some recovery and return to a shadow of its glorious past. With international travel, largely still restricted in India and the black Swann event not completely past us, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cast its shadow on the year 2021. As much as we want the magic wand to be rolled, we know that this year will grapple with the long, dark shadow that 2020 has cast.
