In a major relief for Ganesh devotees during Ganeshotsav, Mumbai Metro has permitted passengers to travel with Ganesh idols. However, the permissible size of the idol varies depending on the Metro line.
On Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), operated by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), devotees can carry Ganesh idols measuring up to 18 inches (45 centimetres) in height. The height will be measured from the bottom of the idol to its highest point.
Instructions outlining the dos and don’ts for passengers travelling with Ganesh idols have been displayed at stations along the Metro 3 corridor, which runs between Cuffe Parade and Aarey-JVLR.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)-operated Metro lines have permitted Ganesh idols of up to 3 feet in height. These include:
Thus, devotees travelling with Ganesh idols should note that the limit is 18 inches on Metro Line 3, while idols measuring up to 3 feet are permitted on Metro Lines 2A, 2B, 7 and 9.
Ganesh idols will also be permitted on Metro Line 1, which operates between Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar. However, the operator has not yet clarified the maximum permissible height for idols on this line.
The Metro administration has appealed to devotees to ensure that carrying Ganesh idols does not cause inconvenience to fellow passengers. Passengers are also reminded that carrying flammable or explosive substances, dangerous goods, hazardous materials and other prohibited items on the Metro is strictly prohibited.
Devotees planning to travel by Metro with Ganesh idols are therefore advised to check the specific Metro line and the applicable idol-size limit before beginning their journey.
