On September 3, within one and a half day of Ganpati Bappa's arrival, the devotees had to bid farewell with a heavy heart to the 'Ghar Ganpatis' which are usually kept by the devotees at home, as per the rituals. Every year, these devotees bring Bappa home and on the second day of the festival, they send Bappa off with pomp for Visarjan.

The immersion ceremony is conducted at various places across the city like Girgaon Beach, Shivaji Park, Dadar, Juhu Beach, Versova Beach, along with artificial ponds created by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) across the city.

Meanwhile, as emotional as the farewell gets, the devotees bid farewell the deity with chants of 'Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya' (Arrive quickly once again next year). In the meantime, the civic body takes special precaution to ensure they don't hurt the sentiments of the devotees while immersing the idol and therefore, special arrangements are made.

According to the data, Visarjan of more than 9,079 Ganesha idols was conducted by 6:00 pm on September 3. Out of which, around 2,341 idols were immersed in the artificial pond, an option which is slowly becoming prevalent amongst nature lovers.

Meanwhile, by 9:00 pm around 60 Sarvajanik  Ganpati idols were immersed, whereas around 38,510 Ghar Ganpati idols were immersed. Out of which, the Visarjan of 16 Sarvajanik Ganpati idols along with 9,633 small idols was done in artificial ponds.
