The garbage that is spilt along the railway tracks does not only spread diseases but also slows down the trains. Central Railway (CR) officials have said that at a few locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the garbage piles have restricted the local train's speed limit.

For instance, the speed limit for trains  is nearly 100 KMPH, on the sixth line between Kurla and Thane. However, due to garbage on tracks, between Vikhroli and Kanjur Marg, the trains slow down to 30 KMPH.

Due to slush, trains are unable to run full speed on the Thane-Airoli section of the TransHarbour line and along the Trombay-Kurla section of the goods line. Speed is also being restricted between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli due to waste being dumped onto the tracks from around a dozen slum colonies at several spots.

A CR official said that garbage causes corrosion and it also reduces the life span of the railway tracks. A member from the railway workers' union said that the garbage and slush cause health issues to the workers as they operate amid unbearable stench.

Meanwhile, slum-dwellers, while empathising with the railway workers, said that there is a lack of toilets in slum colonies. Therefore, they have to defecate along the tracks.
