Post- the Elphinstone stampede, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started taking action against illegal hawkers. Scared hawkers are now finding their own way to fool the BMC officials.

A video is doing the rounds where few hawkers are seen hiding their vegetables in an underground gutter — which is built to carry out excess water — in Santacruz’s Vakola area. After officials leave, hawkers take out their belongings and start selling again.

When this video went viral, the BMC officials took action against these hawkers.

In order to make the roads hawkers-free, BMC is seeking suggestions and objections over the hawker's policy and is also taking action against the illegal hawkers.

Just like Santacruz, hawkers follow the same practice in many other areas where they hide their belongings in a cavity which is built to carry out rainwater harvesting. Not only this, hawkers also hide their vegetables and other things in a manhole under the Keshavsut flyover.

When Mumbai Live contacted BMC H East ward officer Alka Sasane, she confirmed the video is of Vakola’s Nehru Road, Manthan Plaza. She added that the civic officials not only took action against them but they also seized their items. When BMC’s additional commissioner Abasaheb Jarhad was shown the video, he said that he will order all the assistant commissioners of the wards to take strict action against the hawkers.
