As per reports, heavy rains are expected to further inundate parts of the Virar and Palghar, adjoining Mumbai. Moreover, moderate rain is expected in the South and the Central parts of Mumbai soon.

The cyclonic circulation which was earlier in the south of Gujrat is close to Palghar and is expected to move north. The area can expect to witness downpour by August 6, evening.  

Due to the incessant rainfall in the city, the Vihar lake, which supplies water to Mumbai, has overflowed. With the continual rain lashing the city for three days, the lake overflowed on Wednesday night. On July 27, the Tulsi, similarly overflowed.

There are seven lakes - Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) which provide water to the city of Mumbai.

The rainfall in Mumbai this year broke the previous 46-year record. The highest rainfall recorded in Colaba was in 1974 which was 262 mm, while on Wednesday, August 5, it recorded 293.8 mm of rain.

According to the IMD, several areas in Mumbai and suburbs received more than 200 mm rainfall since Monday night. Many houses in the low-lying areas like Kurla, Sion and parts of Bhandup were flooded due to the heavy downpour. Moreover, several vehicles, which suffered engine problems due to the heavy downpour, were seen lying abandoned on the roads.

Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, in order to comprehend the seriousness of the situation, had visited major flooded areas of the city. Thackeray, further in a statement said that he took stock of the situation at Gandhi Market, Matunga and King’s Circle with Municipal Commissioner of Greater Mumbai, I S Chahal adding that the citizens should stay at home in view of the situation.
