Thane Police have imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy and oversized vehicles in Thane city during the Ganesh festival to ensure smooth immersion processions and prevent traffic congestion.
The restrictions have been issued under Sections 115 and 116(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act by Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre and Joint Commissioner of Police Dr Dnyaneshwar Chavan.
The Ganesh festival will be celebrated from September 14 to 25, 2026. Large processions are expected during the immersion of one-and-a-half-day, five-day, Gauri-Ganpati and seven-day idols, as well as on Anant Chaturdashi.
According to the traffic police, heavy vehicles will not be allowed on roads under the jurisdiction of the Thane City Traffic Division from 12.01 am on the respective immersion days until the processions conclude.
The restrictions will apply on September 15, 18, 19 and 20. On Anant Chaturdashi, September 25, heavy vehicles will be prohibited from 12.01 am until 6 am on September 26.
Thane is an important transit route with three national highways and one state highway passing through the city. A large number of heavy vehicles travelling to and from other states also pass through the city, raising concerns about additional traffic pressure during the festival.
However, on September 14 to 25, except on the immersion days, heavy vehicles will be permitted to operate between 12 midnight and 6 am.
Traffic Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Shirsat said the restrictions have been introduced as a preventive measure to ensure that Ganesh immersion processions and the movement of devotees take place smoothly.
