Mumbai might soon lose out on several open spaces as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun the process of undoing the "erroneous" marking of open spaces. They are doing this on plots where building permission was already granted.

In 2015-16, the civic body surveyed existing land use. They marked them as 'reserved from open spaces' on the plots vacant at that time.

Recently, a few "errors" were brought into the municipal commissioner and Maharashtra urban development department's notice. It was pointed out during a presentation done by a body of experts -Practising Engineers, Architects and Town Planners Association (PEATA).

PEATA said that the unreserved plots in the developmental plan were shown as proposed reservations fully or partly. It was done despite having valid development permission like approved layout or industrial to residential/commercial on the land.

Now the BMC's Development Plan department has formulated a new policy. According to the policy, the original reservation of building construction for residential and commercial purposes can be implemented. The urban development has already started the process of reversing such reservations and restoring the original reservation.

The BMC has cited a lack of communication as one of the reasons for the error. Meanwhile, real estate industry experts have said that the civic body had done it intending to increase open spaces in Mumbai.
