The historic Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG) reopened its doors today after nearly a year and a half of renovations. For the management team, who see themselves as guardians of this iconic space, the moment felt as rewarding as a well-timed straight drive racing to the boundary.

The refreshed club now sports a modern look, with interiors painted in elegant shades of Wimbledon green and beige. A notable addition is the plan to launch a women’s cricket team, reflecting a strong push toward gender equality.

SPG received its Occupation Certificate (OC) on September 19, and just three days later, the doors have opened to welcome back its approximately 3,000 member families. The excitement is palpable.

Keeping in mind the rise of Indian women’s cricket, the club aims to provide proper facilities such as changing rooms and restrooms for female players, especially those visiting for MCA tournaments.

The Reigning Legacy

Established in 1909 as the New Maharashtra Cricket Club, the Shivaji Park Gymkhana underwent name changes and relocations before settling into its current location in Shivaji Park. The existing clubhouse structure was inaugurated in 1931, and by 1942, the gymkhana had expanded to its present size of 19,000 square yards.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Deep Connection with Shivaji Park Gymkhana

It was at this iconic Mumbai institution that Tendulkar began his training under the guidance of legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar. Often referred to as the "Nursery of Indian Cricket," the Gymkhana has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous international players, with Tendulkar being its most celebrated alumnus. Even today, it continues to serve as a vital hub for cricketing talent in the city.
