A large-scale misuse of industrial land has been reported in the Kandivli industrial estate in Mumbai’s Charkop area.
The estate, originally designated only for industrial purposes since 1961, is now being widely used for commercial activities such as bars, restaurants, gyms, lodges, and showrooms, which violates land-use regulations.
This unauthorised conversion has allegedly led to significant revenue losses for the government, as some occupants have avoided paying required premiums and duties.
Following complaints, the Mumbai Suburban Collector has ordered an investigation and directed multiple authorities, including municipal officials and police, to take appropriate action against illegal usage and constructions.
However, the situation is complicated by legal challenges, as the estate association has obtained a court stay on earlier government orders to reclaim the land.
