While Mumbaikars woke to cloudy skies and scattered showers on Thursday, September 4, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has moderate to heavy rainfall across Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for the day.

The weather department also issued a yellow alert for today and tomorrow, September 5.

The increased rainfall activity has been attributed to a low-pressure system currently active over the Bay of Bengal. This system is channelling moisture-laden winds towards India's western coast, significantly enhancing monsoon conditions.

Besides, the rainfall is expected to ease between September 5 and 7, however, cloudy conditions will persist. The monsoon's influence is predicted to continue until mid-September, after which a gradual decline in rainfall intensity is anticipated.

The report indicates that the impacts will be felt across the MMR. In Navi Mumbai, light rainfall is expected initially, progressing to moderate or heavy showers later.

Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli are likely to experience intense spells by evening, which officials warn could lead to water accumulation on several roads and exacerbate traffic congestion during peak travel hours.

Similarly, the western suburbs, including Vasai-Virar and Mira-Bhayander, are forecast to receive moderate rain throughout the day. The IMD has not ruled out the possibility of isolated heavy showers, particularly in coastal pockets.
