Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) was one of the worst affected airports during this period as IndiGo flights across the country were cancelled between December 1 and 8. A senior official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation visited the airport on Tuesday, December 9, to review the situation.

The disruptions were linked to IndiGo’s crew rostering issues. This led to one of the biggest aviation breakdowns in recent years. Passengers at Mumbai Airport experienced large-scale delays and cancellations.

At Mumbai airport alone, IndiGo had scheduled 3,171 flights during the eight-day period. Out of these, 905 flights were cancelled. This resulted in a high cancellation rate of 28.53 per cent.

Around 40,789 passengers were stranded because of these cancellations. Another 1,475 flights were delayed by more than 30 minutes. This accounted for 46.51 per cent of IndiGo’s operations at the airport and affected over 2.66 lakh passengers.

Several key routes saw major interruptions. Flights from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Cochin, Goa, and Lucknow were heavily affected. International flights to Istanbul and Amsterdam also experienced disruptions. The highest level of chaos was reported on December 4 and 5.

On Tuesday, the disruptions continued. IndiGo cancelled 14 flights and delayed 17 more at Mumbai airport. The airline stated that it would clear 90 per cent of the 780 pending baggage items at the airport by Wednesday morning.

On the same day, there was an unexpected examination by MoCA Joint Secretary Madhu Sudan Shankar, and he discussed the situation with the on-ground staff. In total, over three lakh passengers faced major disruptions in the country.
