Maharashtra Government announces independent corona cell for police

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Sunday expressed grief over the demise of two policemen due to the coronavirus or COVID-19 and announced a special corona cell for the police. The state home minister said that the government will stand behind the families of the deceased police personnel. 

While addressing the citizens via Facebook Live, Deshmukh announced ₹50 lakh each as compensation for the families of the deceased policemen. Furthermore, the state home minister announced that the kin and kith of the deceased would be given a government job. 

“Corona can infect any person and police are no exception. At this juncture, police are working equally hard and playing an important role. The government will firmly stand behind them. We have decided to set up an independent corona cell for police,” Anil Deshmukh said. 

In his address, Deshmukh informed that there will be two different nodal officers for Mumbai and for the rest of Maharashtra. Joint Commissioner Naval Bajaj will look after Mumbai where two hospitals will be reserved for the police where only they will be treated. 

Moreover, Additional Director General of Police Sanjeev Singhal will be nodal officer for remaining Maharashtra, the state home minister said while adding that the respective commissioner of police, superintendent of police will create separate police cells at the district level. 

Moreover, Anil Deshmukh praised Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for his stance to not politicise the present situation amid the coronavirus outbreak. “Every person has to fight together, this is not the time to politicise the issue,” the Maharashtra home minister said. 

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also appreciated the efforts of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Gadkari for urging everyone to join hands in Maharashtra to combat the spread of the deadly virus.

Speaking on the plight of the migrant workers and labourers amid the coronavirus lockdown, Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday assured the stranded migrants that their issues will be dealt with urgency.
