India’s first indigenous bullet train will run on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor, using the domestically manufactured B28 trainset in the first phase. The initial stretch between Surat and Vapi (97 km) is expected to start operations in 2027, before expanding to the full 508 km route.

Developed by BEML in Bangalore, the B28 will initially run at 250 km/h, with future trains planned for 320–350 km/h, and will operate with the ETCS Level 2 signaling system. While Japanese Shinkansen trains are still under development, this marks a major step toward self-reliance in India’s high-speed rail sector, with all upcoming high-speed corridors expected to use Indian-made rolling stock.

The government has also announced seven new high-speed rail projects connecting cities like Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Varanasi, and Siliguri, reinforcing the country’s commitment to developing a domestic bullet train ecosystem.
