The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on July 8, issued a work order to begin the long-awaited redevelopment of Krantiveer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Hospital in Vikhroli. Construction is expected to start soon and will be completed in three years. BMC had started the process earlier in February.
The hospital will be transformed into a 13-storey, 500-bed super-speciality facility. The project is estimated to cost INR 593 crore. It will offer specialised services, such as gastroenterology and cardiology.
As per reports, the new hospital will cover 37,789 square meters. A separate 21-story building, spanning 5,782 square metres, will house staff quarters. The hospital will have a total of 500 beds.
The hospital will serve nearly 8-9 lakh residents of Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, and Bhandup. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will soon attend a bhumi pujan ceremony at the site.
The hospital was closed in 2018 due to its deteriorating condition. Then, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde had instructed the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to hand over the adjacent land from the hospital to BMC for the construction of the hospital.
However, MHADA refused to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the land. This was due to pending expenses of INR 13.24 crore related to the land. But BMC refused to pay the amount. This led to delays in the hospital's reconstruction.
