The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal today, February 4, presented the Budget estimates for the financial year 2023-24 proposed at INR 52,619.07 crore which exceeds the 2022-23 budget (INR 4,5949.21 crore) by 14.52 per cent.

Moreover, it is pertinent to note that in the history of the BMC, for the first time capital expenditure has crossed 50 per cent.

After the budget presentation, IS Chahal, while talking to media said that health, education, environment, and transparency -- these are the four pillars of our budget.

"BMC has received 965 suggestions and objections from citizens giving inputs for the Budget. Based on these suggestions, many points were included in the overall outlay of the Budget," he added.

Here are the key highlights from the Budget 2023-24:

  • Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road project got an allocation of INR 3,545 crores.
  • A budget provision of INR 1,060 crores has been made for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project. This will help to cut down the travel time between these distance to 20 minutes.
  • BMC has decided to develop a parking app by virtue of which all of the 32 civic public parking lots off street parking and 91 on street parking will be regulated.
  • Meanwhile, the long-pending Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project has been allocated INR 2,792 crores in the budget. The total cost of the project is around INR 30,000 crores.
  • The BMC will install five air purifiers in five most crowded areas such as Dahisar Toll Naka, Mulund Check Naka, Mankhurd, Kalanagar Junction and Haji Ali Junction.
  • INR 800 crores for BEST. In 2022-23, BEST got a total of INR 1,382.28 crore.
  • For the education sector, the Budget estimates are proposed at INR 3,347.13 crore.
  • The process of starting E-Library in 50 primary schools of the BMC will be completed in the year 2023-24.
  • Distribution of free books, uniforms and other materials will continue and a budget of INR 132 crore allocated.
  • Maths and Science centres to be set up in 88 primary schools
  • BMC to install a total of 54 astronomical laboratories with necessary equipment in BMC schools. For this, a budget of INR 60 lakhs has been allocated. These laboratories aim to impart the knowledge of astronomical developments and to inculcated and increase curious attitude of BMC school students. In addition, it will also help to develop skills like observation, concentration and comprehension in the students, thereby increasing their scientific attitude.
  • Setting up of 'talking walls' in 245 BMC primary schools underway.
  • INR 10 lakh allocated for ‘out-of-school’ children campaign.
  • Besides, BMC has earmarked INR 250 crore for various social impact initiatives in FY 2023-24. The fund has been allocated under various headers which include financial schemes for women, the differently-abled, transpersons, senior citizens and a women’s training scheme.
