The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday, December 19 predicted very light to light rain in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar in the next 48 hours. Scientist at IMD Mumbai S.G. Kamble stated that due to the formation of a low-pressure in the Arabian Sea and upper-air cyclonic circulation over west Madhya Pradesh, light rain activity has been predicted along the Konkan coast and slowly moving inland over the state between Sunday and Monday.

Earlier this month, Mumbai experienced light to moderate rain when Cyclone Ockhi went past it on December 5 and 6, 2019. South Mumbai recorded 82.2mm in South Mumbai and 53.8mm rain was recorded in the suburbs. Notably, It was also the all-time highest December rain for Mumbai. 

The current rise in onion prices is primarily due to excess rainfall taking place earlier in Karnataka and now in Maharashtra. Heavy unseasonal rainfall had locked latest onion produce in wet fields throughout onion growing states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana. As a ripple effect, onion prices increased everywhere in the country.
