The Christian community has voiced their discontent against the razing of structures inside the precinct of the St Anthony’s Church, reported the Times of India. This structure has been stated as a heritage site by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The account highlighted that in light of the Madh-Marve road widening, notice for the demolition of structures that are hindering the road widening was issued.
Makarand Dagadkhair the assistant municipal commissioner mentioned that he had allocated more than 1,200 structures in the ward for razing in order to facilitate road widening. Based on the narrative, he elaborated that since the church is a heritage site, it isn’t being touched and only some meters near the boundary wall will be taken.
Claimed to be around 400 years old, it is said to be one of the oldest churches in the city. The Parochial House according to parishioners was reconstructed in 1872 and is now a home for priests, has church offices, and is utilized for counselling and philanthropic work. The boundary wall touches this Parochial House.
The account also spoke about how the founder of Watchdog Foundation, advocate Godfrey Pimenta elucidated on BMC’s heritage regulations, that the complete precinct is a heritage site and is in the Grade-IIA classification. Pimenta stated that civic officials need to get authorization from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee prior to proclaiming a notice. He went on to elaborated that after procuring land and broadening the road, the civic authority lets hawkers encroach on it and turns a blind eye towards illegal parking.
Locals too are against the proposed activity.
