As the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra crosses the 10,000-mark, the restrictions in Mumbai and Pune metropolitan region - MMR and PMR - are likely to remain till June and the lockdown will be extended beyond May 3. 

According to a report published in the Economic Times, the restrictions on local trains, buses, shops and establishments may continue to remain till at least the month June, said one of the state officials to the ET, as the COVID-19 cases in the city and its surroundings are increasing. 

Further, Maharashtra government authorities have informed that the number of cases in these cities and its neighbouring areas is on the rise and therefore, parts of the state would continue to be under lockdown at least till June. 

“There is no question of lifting lockdown in Mumbai, Pune and MMR region as of now. With the increasing numbers, there may be a need to tighten restrictions,” a state government official was quoted by the economic times as saying. 

Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state in India due to the coronavirus outbreak with almost 10,498 cases reported for the COVID-19 while the death toll in the state has risen to 459. Of these coronavirus cases, nearly 7,061 cases have been reported till now from Mumbai alone. 

Mumbai is adding close to over 200 cases per day and the Pimpri-Chinchwad region in Pune metropolitan region is also seeing a hike in the COVID-19 cases. In view of the rising numbers, Pune has been turned into a containment zone by the orders of the administration.

Meanwhile, a total of 1391 builds were sealed in Mumbai recently as containment zones, as of April 29. Of these buildings, 782 have been marked in the congested areas. Here's a complete list of containment zones in Mumbai.
