The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for Mumbai and Konkan regions till June 12 as a depression over the southeast Arabian Sea, south of Porbandar in Gujarat, is likely to move northwestward and intensify into a cyclonic storm.

A cyclonic circulation has come up over Southeast Arabian Sea and neighbouring Lakshadweep region. In the wake of cyclone forecast, the weather bureau on Tuesday morning, June 6, issued a warning for the same.

In a warning issued at 11 am the weather department said that depression has formed over southeast Arabian Sea and lay centered at 0530 IST about 920km west-southwest of Goa, 1,120km south-southwest of Mumbai.

Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region in the next 24 hours. It is likely to strengthen further in the subsequent 48 hours with very little shift of its core area.

The city is likely to experience scattered showers with occasional heavy rainfall due to the onset of the monsoon season later this week, the IMD said. Moreover, heavy rains are anticipated over Maharashtra, with Pune and Mumbai likely to experience intense rainfall from June 8 to 10.

Experts have opined that such weather conditions will drive the moisture away leading to a weak onset. The official date for monsoon onset over Mumbai is June 11.

This may also trigger the monsoon current over mainland, to start with Lakshadweep and Kerala.

It further said rain activities will certainly intensify along the West Coast of the country from Kerala to Maharashtra. The cyclone will help the monsoon current to reach Mumbai on time. Sea conditions will be rough to very rough along Karnataka and Maharashtra coast between June 8 and 10.

The intensified cyclonic conditions in the Arabian Sea will lead to rough seas along the Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat coasts. Residents and officials of these areas are advised to exercise caution and follow safety measures. Fishermen are urged to avoid venturing into the sea during the specified period to ensure their safety.

If the low pressure area consolidates into a cyclonic storm, it will be named Cyclone Biparjoy as named by Bangladesh. The exact track of the cyclone remains uncertain at this point. While some models suggest northward movement along the west coast of India, others indicate an initial northward movement followed by a re-curve towards Oman and Yemen.
