The arrival of the much-awaited monsoon in interior Maharashtra, including Pune, is expected to face a delay this year, reports stated. Forecast experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have predicted that a system over the Arabian Sea has the potential to intensify into a deep depression or cyclone. This may push back the onset of the monsoon to June 15.

Typically, the monsoon season starts in the southernmost regions of Maharashtra around June 6-7. Then, it gradually spreads across the entire state and reaching Pune by June 15. Due to the presence of the Arabian Sea system, IMD has cautioned that certain parts of Maharashtra may not experience the monsoon until at least June 8.

The extended forecast suggests that the monsoon is anticipated to reach southern Maharashtra between June 14 and 15. Furthermore, it is expected to have an impact on the entire state, including central India, during the week of June 16-22.

However, the combination of partly cloudy skies at night and early morning has contributed to trapping the heat near the surface in Mumbai. Experts explain that such temperatures are not unusual during this transitional period from late May to early June.

As on Monday, June 5, Mumbai's regional meteorological department (RMC) recorded a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius at Colaba and Santacruz observatory respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature was recorded at 35.2 degrees Celsius and 34.7 degrees Celsius respectively.
