The rising price of petrol and diesel has already become a cause of concern, especially for middle-class households. There has been a slight relief in the last couple of days. However, people are in for another jolt as the price of non-subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder was hiked by ₹25 per cylinder. This increased price is effective from August 17.

After this recent price increase, 14.2 kilogram LPG cylinder will cost ₹859.50 in Delhi and Mumbai. However, it is the people of Kolkatta that will have to shell out the maximum for a LPG cylinder as it costs ₹886 per cylinder in the city.

It is noteworthy that the price of LPG cylinders between January 1 and August 17 will have climbed by ₹165 per cylinder.

This is the second consecutive month in which the price of a gas cylinder was increased. In the month of July too the price of the LPG cylinder was increased by ₹25.50.

The prices are increased based on the international benchmark rate of LPG and the exchange rate of the US dollar and rupee. The rates of LPG cylinder are revised at the beginning of each month.

After the recent price increase, Congress slammed the government. The opposition party claims that since November last year it has hiked the price of the cooking gas by ₹265 per cylinder and it has not given any subsidy on the cooking gas since May 2020.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate in a press conference said, "The prices of the LPG cylinders have been hiked once again by ₹25. With the current hike in the prices, the LPG cylinder price in Delhi has gone to ₹859. She said that since November 2020, the government has increased prices of the LPG cylinders by ₹265, which is a 44 per cent hike. Shrinate was accompanied by party spokespersons Alka Lamba and Radhika Khera.
