After a series of trials, Maharashtra’s centralised single emergency response helpline number 112 is likely to become operational from January 26, 2021, i.e Republic Day. This helpline service will replace all other emergency numbers after it is functional.

Citizens in distress can get immediate assistance from police in the state on dialling the helpline number ‘112’ from their phones in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur and Pune, officials said.

Until the new helpline number becomes popular and citizens get habituated with this, it can be used alongside 100 and 108.

The Maharashtra Police has given a five-year contract to Mahindra Defence to set up and operate two control rooms in Navi Mumbai and Nagpur. The police have also acquired office space in buildings in Navi Mumbai for its primary contact centre and in Nagpur for its secondary contact centre. The firm already operates the Uttar Pradesh Police’s emergency response centre.

All personnel receiving calls will be civilian employees of Mahindra Defence while police personnel will work at the contact centres in supervisory roles. Seventy per cent of the calls will be routed to Navi Mumbai and remaining to Nagpur.

As part of this project, the police department is purchasing 1,502 four wheelers and 2,269 two wheelers to respond to emergency calls in time, officials said.
