Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to ensure that the renovation of Mumbai's iconic former Air India building focuses on creating a citizen-friendly, efficient, and modern administrative hub. The landmark building is expected to accommodate several state government departments after its redevelopment.
Chairing a review meeting at his official residence, Varsha, on Monday, August 3, the Chief Minister emphasized that the building's redesign should improve public access to government services while enhancing administrative efficiency. He clarified that the final decision on shifting government departments will be taken only after a detailed planning and assessment exercise.

Fadnavis instructed Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal to hold consultations with all concerned departments and prepare a comprehensive relocation plan. According to the Chief Minister, departments should be selected for relocation based on their ability to improve governance and make public services more accessible.
"The administrative structure should be simple, efficient, and citizen-centric. Any decision regarding the relocation of government offices will be taken only after detailed planning," Fadnavis said during the meeting.
Architects also presented redevelopment proposals for the iconic building, which were reviewed by the Chief Minister along with Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale, Minister of State Indranil Naik, senior officials, and department representatives.
The Maharashtra government has approved ₹181.01 crore for the renovation and modernization of the former Air India building.

The third floor has been designated as a 2,019-square-foot refuge area.
The 22nd and 23rd floors have been earmarked for the Maharashtra Cabinet and conference halls. The 22nd floor offers 9,864 square feet of usable space, while the 23rd floor provides 1,852 square feet.
The building includes two basements, each measuring 55,844 square feet, with parking capacity for 76 vehicles per basement. Overall, the structure has a built-up area of approximately 4.99 lakh square feet.
The redevelopment project aligns with the Maharashtra government's broader efforts to modernize governance through Government Process Re-engineering (GPR).
Under the initiative, departments have been instructed to simplify public services by increasing digital verification and reducing the need for citizens to visit government offices. The government plans to integrate platforms such as Aadhaar, DigiLocker, and Maha-Samanvay to enable automatic verification and pre-filled application forms.
These reforms aim to improve transparency, reduce paperwork, speed up service delivery, and make government schemes more accessible to citizens.
Once completed, the renovated Air India building is expected to become a state-of-the-art administrative complex that combines modern infrastructure with citizen-focused governance. The project reflects the Maharashtra government's vision of creating an efficient, digitally enabled, and accessible public administration system while preserving one of Mumbai's most recognizable landmarks.
